step up rings

I'm getting an Optura 40 with a 34mm lens.

Should I get 34mm filters?

Should I step up to 37mm?

Should I step up from 34mm to some larger standard?

Will it effect the picture if I do?

thanks.

Filter Sizes

Should I get 34mm filters? - Yes, if that is the correct size for your lens.

Should I step up to 37mm? - Only if you have another camera or a specific requirement that takes 37mm filters.

Should I step up from 34mm to some larger standard? - No

Will it effect the picture if I do? - Probably not.

Step up rings are an inexpensive way to avoid having to buy extra filters if you have multiple cameras or if you just not find the filter in the size you need. Step down rings (a smaller filter on a larger lens) might cut off of the edges or vignetting of the image especially in wide angle shots.

I agree, generally, with poncho. He offers good advice.

Here is a slightly different perspective you might want to consider. The most prevalent conversion lenses are those that come with 37mm filter threads. That is because almost all Sony camcorders have 37mm filter threads and Sony is really big in the camcorder market. So, if you are interested in inexpensive conversion lenses--say, a wide angle, you might want to invest in a 34 to 37mm stepup ring so you can attach these lenses to your camcorder. If you left the stepup ring on your cam, you would need to use 37mm filters to avoid removing and attaching the ring. Of course, your lens cap wouldn't work so you would have to get another one. But, 37mm lens caps are pretty common and inexpensive. Lastly, if you decide to stack filters in order to get some special effects, larger diameter filters are less likely to cause vignetting.

Just a few thoughts for you to ponder. Congratulations on your new cam!

I concede, StrongDotGuy grabbed me around the neck and convinced me that he was more correct. In defense I can only state that I have over 40 years of filters and none of them ever seem to be the correct size when I get a different camera....
