Windows XP: No Video/Audio but can control Camcorder
I have a GR-D33U miniDV player that I am trying to capture video on my PC. I have already recorded several tapes and I just recently had time to try and feed it through my PC. I have a Dell 8300 with Firewire. The JVC manual gives me very little directions and I don't even know what software to use. When I plugged in the camcorder through the Firewire, Windows XP home recognized it and said it was installed and ready to use.
I opened up Windows Movie player and tried to "Record" some of the video I had recorded, but the preview pane is blank with no audio through the PC, even though it is playing on the camcorder while connected. However, what baffles me is that the buttons on the computer to play, rewind, etc do function in that the camcorder responds to these directions. I have also tried "capturing" with ImageMixer 1.7 with the same results. The JVC website is aweful with no help for driver updates, etc. Is there something really easy I'm missing?

As most people say JVC runs ok under SP1, why would you change the SID to "1" under Sp2 when "3" is what it was in SP1?

xp no audio/video but can control cam (possible solution)
I had the exact same problem , could control camera but no audio or video preview or capturing. I was using an adaptec 4300 firewire card. After trying a lot of things, I finally changed my firewire card to Pinnacle system's dv Linx 1394 card. Was immediately able to preview and capture using studio 8, imagemixer 7.1 etc.
p.s jvc tech support said that most Pinnacle firewire cards should work on Jvc digital camcorders. I have the GR-D33US, running xp.

I am having the same problem
I have a JVC GRD270 (one week old) and I am having the same problem. I installed an Adaptec AFW-4300 firewire card into my Dell this morning and have been going nuts trying to get the video to capture. As you said, the computer recognizes the camcorder and even instructs the camcorder to rewind and play (and sound and video starts playing through the camcorder) but nothing shows up on the preview pane on the computer screen and nothing gets captured. Does anyone have any suggestions...am I doing something wrong?

problem solved - in part
I followed the instructions in one of the replies to the original post on this string, went to the microsoft site and downloaded a fix for the IEEE problem assoicated with service pack 2, and it solved the problem. My video and audio began to capture and I was able to burn my miniDV tape to a DVD. Please note that the download does not solve the problem itself. You have to read all the text on the microsoft site about what to do after you download. Apparently, you also have to reset the a SID value on your computer to "1". I didn't realize that the first time. After I did that (and restarted my computer) it worked.
Now, the concern I have is the quality of the video that burned to the DVD. I am not a videophile by any stretch of the imagination and would be happy with a decent quality burn, but on my end DVD product, the video was very grainy. Does anyone have any suggestion to improve that?

I have similar problem with a GRD33U, but I am trying to use the usb cable, not a dv (since my PC has no firewire). Will these fixes work with usb? Doesn't look like it to me. Any ideas on how to get my usb to recognize, it keeps saying my camera is an unknown device

Petraman: You CAN NOT use the USB output to transfer video to your PC. The USB is for still images ONLY. DV records at a bitrate of 28mbps, UBS just doesn't have the bandwidth to handle it.
ESC: The output quality of your video will depend on the encoder and bitrate you are using to convert the DV stream to MPEG2. I use the Adobe MPEG encoder that comes with Premeire Pro using 2 pass 4 mbps VBR encoding and get excellent results.

I have JVC GR-D33U. And having the same problem. I've been using camera for a half of a year now and been transfering my videos from camera to computer easily until now. I'm using Arcsoft Showbiz program for capturing video. All over sudden, it's not working. I can control camera from the program, but cannot capture video, it is not playing in the preview window.
I tried to follow the instructions on the microsoft site from that link posted here. It didn't work for me. I couldn't find the exact path in my computer registry like this one where I had to apply changes: HKEY_LOCALSt_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum \PCI\1394_hc_hw_id\1394_instance_id\
Device. Butl I went to the closet I could find and changed the Sidkey from "2" to "1". Still nothing had changed afterwards, like I didn't do anything. I think you gotta be a real geek to sove this problem. Wish I never had Service Pack2, that caused problem for sure.

ARG... I'm fighting with this also and having no luck!
I've downloaded and installed the update...
Here's where I am in the registry edittor:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\V 1394\NIC1394\c3379fe01800\Device Parameters
I'm not seeing a sidspeed but I am seeing an InstanceIndex and that's what I'm going with... no luck after trying 0, 1, 2... it was set at 1 when I started testing.
Any others that have found their way around this?

JVC grd33u thanks to whoever posted....
I have bought the pinnacle av/dv firewire card, studio 9 set. Didn't capture. So I bought the dazzle plug in device, took it home, still would not capture. I remember printing a few articles off this board. Here was the solution.
With computer off, plug firewire into camcorder, turn camcorder on to play. wait until it is powered up. Then turn on the computer, wait for it to to get all loaded up. when you are at the desktop, LOG OFF the computer (NOT TURN OFF) log back on. open pinnacle, it works from there. So far it has worked everytime.
Thanks to the poster,

I have the same problem, after one month of search and test y solve it.
The problem is that the computer has a harware conflict with the firewire chipset and the camcorder, the most popular problem is that the firewire chipset is VIA, and it generate problems in a computers with motherboards without VIA chipset (INTEL in my case), in computers with VIA chipset in motherboard (Biostar) it works god.
I solved the problem changin the firewire card with VIA chipset for another with TI (Texas Instruments, www.adstech.com) now it works perfect.

I did everything that's mentioned in this thread above - nothing....except swapping the cards.
In next few days I will get Pinnacle firewire card that comes with Dazzle video editor package. Hope it works.
if that does not do it.... ... i don't know what else...I will keep you posted....
