SP2 firewire problems
I have recently installed the service pack 2 pack from microsoft and now my computer is not detecting my camcorder. I have the Sony HC30E
Usually I have to plug the camcorder in the firewire port, turn the camera on and then reboot my computer for it to recongise it but now when I do this I get nothing.
Has anyone else had this problem? or know of any fixes?
Thanks

I've detected no problems with Service Pack 2 which I installed about a week ago. I would suspect that if you have to plug the camcorder in, turn the camera on and then reboot your computer for the camcorder to be recognized originally then you may have had a problem prior to installing SP2.

Well I have just re-installed my whole operating system and not installed SP2 and the camcorder and firewire all work now. Very strange.
It was working fine last week before sp2 also.

Phew, good to see I wasn't the only one then.
As before, I have returned to SP1 and am going to wait awhile for a patch etc...

I've got the same problem but mines a VX2000. Before SP2 it worked fine - now I've installed SP2 its dead to the world.
It appears that the 1394 drivers have been replaced in SP2 hence the problems.

In the following thread bsrand outlines how he went back to SP1 drivers and fixed his system. Use at your own risk. I have not tried this (SP2 works for me). Bsrand's entire message is copied below. I hope anyone having luck with this will post their results.
Thanks in advance,
Rich

I had the same problem after upgrading to SP2. I also have the Fireconnect 4300 card. I use Adobe Premier 6.5. I found that by rebooting the system with the camcorder connected an on (Canon ZR-30 in my case), all functions worked perfectly. However, if I turned the camcorder off and then back on, Premier would almost stop responding when I attempted to view/capture video from the camcorder. When I was able to open a capture window, the timecode would not display and the response to the shuttle controls was extremely slow, in some cases locking up.
My solution was to copy the old Windows XP SP1 1394 drivers (dated 8-29-2002) back to the \windows\system32\drivers directory. The three drivers are; 1394bus.sys, arp1394.sys and ohci1394.sys. You may want to copy the current drivers (dated 8-4-2004) to a temporary location should you want to restore them later. I found the current drivers were also located at \windows\Driver Cache\i386\sp2.cab. From explorer, double-click on \windows\Driver Cache\i386\sp1.cab to display the contents. Highlight the three drivers listed above, right-click and "extract". Extract them to the \windows\system32\drivers folder and then restart.
I have yet to run into any difficulties running the SP1 drivers. All my video equipment functions correctly now.

It seems to work and I've got my Sony IP7E to work again. However replacing the drivers is a bit of work.
XP keeps a backup copy of the drivers in a directory called /windows/system32/dllcache. These need to be removed before copying the new files as the SP2 ones will keep reappearing in /windows/system32/drivers.
I think there's a redundancy system in place and even when I deleted the ones in the "dllcache" and didn't delete/copy over the ones in "drivers" they reappeared in "dllcache" again.
I worked around it by deleting both sets quickly (the ones in "dllcache" first) and then copied the old drivers to these folders once the SP2 drivers had been successfully deleted.

Just the basics
It seems you have great experience on DV transfers to PC.
I need just the basics:
Can I create uncompressed avi files, just connecting my DVcam
using a firewire card? Or do I need something else?
How/What defines the frame/screen size ofthe avi stored ?
I mean (320x240, 640x480,etc)
Thanks a lot!

Lisa - the quick answer is yes, you can transfer from your camera to computer with just a firewire connection. The only other thing you need is appropriate software, which may have come with your camera. If you are using windows xp, you can use windows movie maker, which comes with.
For more info, check the excellent Consumer Computer Digital Video forum on this site. There are oodles of info there about this subject.

I have exactly the same problem and this is the first suggestion at a fix that I've read! But I am unable to replace the newer drivers with the SP1's. They reappear almost immediately, even after I have deleted them from dllcache and system32/drivers. Any other suggestions on how to get this done? BTW, I have two Sony camcorders that suddenly are not recognized via firewire after "upgrading" to SP2 on 4 different PC's!

This really works!
Thank you, this finally helped me! I have XP SP1 only, but some update rewrote file 1394bus.sys (size 50688, date 2002-10-07). You must replace every file with this filename in your windows subdirectories and restart. I've found it in:
WINDOWS\system32\drivers ,
WINDOWS\system32\dllcache ,
WINDOWS\Driver Cache\i386\ .
YOU CAN DOWNLOAD THE WORKING DRIVER FILES FROM: http://conference.calls.nevvs.com/g...ce_calls/fw.php (first 3 links on the page).

oh, is that another way for it to work?by plugging the camcorder in the firewire port, turn the camera on and then reboot the computer for it to reconise it? its not plug and play? i posted before on how, when i plug in the firewire cable to the port it says cannot reconize USB. Here is what the front of my computer case looks like
Isnt that the firewire port? is something wrong with port? or should i go buy a PCI firewire card?
here is a link to my computers spec: http://www.pcpitstop.com/techexpres...4XZMW3QCJRSBR97
Hope it helps. Thanks guys

Looks like you might have a USB socket and a Firewire socket in the drawing That doesn't tell if you have Firewire or USB either. Go into "Device Manager" and you should have a "IEEE 1394 Bus Host Controller" listed. If it is there, your ieee 1394 card is functioning and should show no conflicts.
[indent]Specific icons in Device Manager indicate device types and indicate any device problems, such as resource conflicts, or whether a device is disabled. The icons that denote device problems or disabled status are:
A yellow exclamation point, which means that the device has a problem.
A red "X," which means that the device is disabled.
A blue "i" for "information," which means that the device has forced resource configurations. This icon is seen only in the two resource views.
Do not confuse it with the "Network Adapters" icon with several items listed, it is not the Firewire.
