JVC DV connection to PC: Solutions

The MANY threads, some of which go on for many pages, are getting too cumbersome to read and digest. Therefore I reduced some of the main solutions to a short list for anyone who has a connection problem to try.
-------------------
1. Do NOT use the battery to power the camera when connected to PC.
(Use the A/C cord/charger)
2. Connect (via DV) and power on the Camcorder BEFORE you boot up the PC (no luck?), then try to connect and power on AFTER the editor is up and running.
3. If you have a new computer that came with Windows XP: check your BIOS settings to see if it has a 1394 Controller definition that has not been set to ENABLED.
4. Download and install the JLIP 3.1 program from
http://www.jvc.ca/downloads/JJC311E.exe
5. Check (and change if necessary) the FireWire DRIVER in Control Panel/System/Device Manager/1394 Bus Controller. It should read: Texas Instruments OHCI Compliant IEEE 1394 Host Controller. Try changing to this driver (it's on your Windows CD) if your current driver is shown as the generic "OHCI Compliant IEEE 1394 Host Controller". Do NOT allow Windows to "search for a better driver...": select instead "display a list...". The attached images show how the driver is shown when installed, and where to find it. Note:
You MUST have a TI chipset in your firewire card for this to work.
6. If ALL of the above fail, you may need to purchase a Texas Instrument chipset FireWire card.
Here are some reportedly working cards:

ADS Tech - PYRO PCI 64 (CircuitCity/USA)
Belkin F5U503 (USA/WalMart, CompUSA)
Dazzle DVClip (USA/CircuitCity)
Pinnacle DVClip (USA)
Pinnacle's DV/AV (USA/Costco)
RetailPlus+ (Canada/WalMart)
Studio 9 AV/DV (USA)
Syba VIA (pcimicro.com/USA)
The following card is listed last as it comes with either a TI or Agere chipset, so you have to open the box first to ensure it's a TI chip on the card:
Adaptec FireConnect 4300 (TI chip, some have Agere chip) (USA)

----------------------------------------------
Note to the Windows XP users who are adventurous:
There are other solutions suggested elsewhere but they are quite complex for the average XP SP2 user: e.g.: reverting to older Windows XP SP1 ".INF" and ".SYS" files. If you know enough to feel comfortable about modifying the operating system, See "Back to SP1?" under:
http://www.rme-audio.de/english/techinfo/fw800sp2.htm

I don't know if these only appear on Windows 98SE or if they are required in Windows XP as well.
I also don't know if they were there BEFORE I connected the camera for the first time, or if they got installed when Windows recognized the camera.
They ARE in the driver list for the IMAGING DEVICE that has appeared in my Device Manager list every time I attach the camera. If I try to start VideoStudio8 capture without the camera attached, I get an error message saying no camera found.

The "properties" of the msdv.sys (system32\drivers) file are:
Version: 4.10.0002326.900 built by: DIRECTX
Description: Microsoft DV Camera and VCR Driver
Company: Microsoft Corporation
Name: msdv.sys

for stream.sys (system32\drivers) they are:
Version: 4.90.0003010.900 built by: DIRECTX
Description: WDM CODEC Class Device Driver 2.0
Company: Microsoft Corporation
Name: Stream.sys

Stream.sys should be on the Windows installation CD.

I did a Web search for msdv.sys and found these pages relevant:

http://www.eu.microsoft.com/whdc/archive/DVCam.mspx

http://support.microsoft.com/defaul...3B[LN]%3B834727

and THIS fix !!! :

http://www.dvdoctor.net/cgi-bin/ubb...L/005935-6.html

Enjoy the read and I hope this helps !!!
