XP not recognizing DV capture device via firewire
I updated to Service pack 2 and now my computer does not recognized my Canon camcorder. Based on other boards it appears a lot of people are having the same problem with SP2. Microsoft is in complete denial so they are no help. I friend of mind is having the same problem after loading SP2. Just to be sure it is nothing else, we've tried four different cameras, new firewire cards and new cables.
Any advice?

1. Windows XP SP2 will put a firewall up which can block the firewire socket because it can be used as a LAN. Check "Control Panel" > "Windows Firewall" > "Advanced" > "Settings..." and make sure "1394 Connection" is checked.
2. Go into "Control Panel" > "System" > "Hardware" > "Device Manager" you should have "Network Adapters" with some items listed, double click on each item and disable them. This is not the same as the listing "IEEE 1394 Bus Host Controller". On my systems I do not have a LAN and I have the items listed under "Network Adapters" disabled and it does not affect my Firewire transfer.
3. Read this post fixed firewire, went back to sp2 to sp1

poncho,
Thanks for the info. Unfortunately, I am still having problems.
The box for the 1394 device was checked as an exception under the windows firewall. I also disabled the 1394 Net adapter device under Network adapters. The camcorder is still not recognized. There was one other device under Network adapters but that relates to my network card. I figured that driver is okay to keep
I tried replacing the SP2 files with the SP1 files and still have the problem.
I really seems like it has something to do with the firewall since the camcorder was recognized prior to the the SP2.
Anyone suggestions?

Poncho,
What camcorder are you using? I am just curious to see if it is any of the cameras I've tried

I have used the Sony DCR-TRV460 and DCR-HC40 on my two XP SP2 systems. They both also worked when my systems were SP1.
I have also used a Panasonic GS9 for a friend but don't remember if it was SP1 or SP2 at the time.
A lot of people have fixed Firewire problems by putting in a cheap $20 firewire card. If you buy one locally that is returnable you might want to try that. Also some camcorders such as JVC seem to only work with Firewire Cards with TI chips. One person found their sound card messed up there Firewire. Another person found that their bios setting had IEEE-1394 disabled and they had to change that setting. These are all of what I have read messages about so don't know how valid it is.

Still not working
I updated with the SP2 fix as indicated by Mentor Ron
I renamed the sp2 cab then replaced the following files found in the driver cab
1394bus
arp1394
nic1394
ohci1394
(are there other files I need to replace?)
I checked the 1394 box under advance under windows firewall (also tried unchecked as well)
I disabled the 1394 device under network adapters
My firewire device shows the proper driver
I am using a Canon zr60 and adaptec combo card
No driver conflicts
Tried new cables
My friend purchased a new computer and has the same problems with my camera and his Sony camera.
I was planning to buy an new camcorder regardless of the firewire issue. Can any give me some suggestions on which camcorder to buy that shoots well in doors (the canon sucks in doors) and does not have any firewire problems? I did not want to spend an arm and leg
Also, if anyone has other suggestions on how to get my system to recognize my camcorder I would greatly appreciate it.

I did read a thread somewhere a while ago where someone had a problem with using a combo card. They went and changed it for a straight Firewire-only card and it fixed their problem.

Well... I took out my combo card and replaced it with my old adaptec 1394 card and I still have the same problem. The old adaptec card used to work with my camera before the SP2 upgrade.
I also updated my bios on my Dell Demision and still have problem.
I am wondering whether I should also change back the 1394 files that I replaced and see if the old adaptec card works.

Make sure you still have the old SP1 1394 files in place. I read that XP will change back anything you change manually when you reboot unless you know how to prevent it.
Did you try all the possible settings for the SID? I think there are 4.

Ieee
Hi everybody!
I have resolved the problem after a high number of trials. Uninstall, install again, patch... the problem were located into Vegas 5.0, Ulead MediaStudio and MovieMaker...
Uninstall the Directx product. Normaly you have no way to do this but :
Regedit/Local Machine/Software/Microsoft ... delete the left line mentionned Directx, close Regedit immediatly, reboot.
Install DIRECTX with a release level of 9.0 (not 9.c!!!)
You should be back on the stage now...
Let me know if it works!
