Andy,
I use a Tamrac 976 soft sided bag for general carring around and I have the Sony hard case for times when I would want to lock things up say while at a gathering or something. I haven't ever checked my camera while flying and the Tamrac fits under the seat nicely and it carries a lot of bits also.
I would start with a soft sided bag and then if you need it go with a hard one.

Airline Theft and Transport Security Idiots

I use a red plastic toolbox like this
http://ace.imageg.net/graphics/prod...s/p998213dt.jpg

Padded with some 3" foam rubber and a cotton lining, it can withstand serious drops and kicks. I used the same for a laptop for years in commercial flights in-cabin and in checked-luggage.

However, truthfully , I have not flown the friendly (sic?) skies since 9-11 and I have heard so much about aggressive TSA executives at check-in and baggage-handlers pilferage that I really fear letting my VX out of my sight.

Has anyone got current experience of hassle or otherwise when flying these days?

These days you have to take the camera out prior to x-ray.

I always carry-on my camera, lenses, and as much audio gear as I can stuff into the two allowable bags. One in the overhead and one under the seat.
