vro converter??
i have a Hitachi DZ-MV350ACNTSC, and i would like to edit my video in Adobe Premiere. unfortunately Premiere doesnt recognize vro files. so, does anyone know a program that can convert vro to mpeg(or another widely used format) without losing quality. preferably free

Have you tried just renaming the file from .vro to .mpg? Some software actually recognize the format just will not load a file with an unlisted (in their program) extension.
TMPGenc I believe has a free basic program and it can read and then rewrite .vro files. Personally I believe any file that gets loaded and then rewritten will probably suffer some loss of quality, whether it is noticeable is another question.
By the way what software came with your camera to write the file to your hard drive? If it is DVD-Moviealbum then the files when transferred to your hard drive will be mpeg2 files.

I have a Hitachi camera that also uses the .vro format but I have had no luck converting it. I have tried renaming it to mpeg and vob with no luck. I have used the DVD Album software that came with my camera to export the videos. I get an mpeg file but it seems to be corrupt. When I try to watch it on my computer (have tried on 3) it gives me audio but no video. Sometimes its a black screen, sometimes its jumbled images from whatever was minimized in my screen. Oddly enough I can play them perfectly fine through my modded XBOX. Whenever I attempt to load the mpeg into any video editing program it either A: crashes the software or B: loads only the video and/or audio. I have tried Windows Movie Maker, Adobe Premier 6.5, ULead Video Studio 7 SE, and version 9, and also DVD Fun Studio. All were the same results. I also tried Digital Media COnverter 2.4 to convert the .vro file instead of DVD Album but it screwed it up worse than the DVDAlbum software. It just left a green bar on the top of the video and the audio was garbled. I have tried copying the .vro file to the HD first also with the exact same results. Please can someone direct me in the right path?

I think your computer is missing some necessary codec files. You are saying that when you transfer the files wih moviealbum it converts to mpeg file which if you view on your xbox you can see fine but on a computer no go?
Try this first Download the trial version of PowerDVD at
http://www.gocyberlink.com/multi/pr...main_1_ENU.html
I have heard that this installs the codecs that are needed for mpeg 2 files. The trial will run out but if you don't uninstall the codecs will still work. They may stay even if you uninstall.
If this doesn't work come back and I will give you info on how to send me a small mpeg file that you create and if it plays on my machine then we know it is simply a codec/software problem.

Thanks for the reply. Like I said, I have tried 3 different PCs playing the video in my home. They are all quite different and primarily used by different people. Same symptoms on them all while playing. I installed the demo of that program with no change. I will try re-exporting it with the new codec installed and for sh|ts and giggles I'll bring my camera to work and try to export it/play it here and see how it works out. On my PC at home I have installed the latest Nimo codec pack. Could the codec in that pack be causing a problem when it exports?

I don't know why the Nimo codec pack would create a problem you could uninstall it and see.
Did I get your first info correct? You have created a dvd and when you try to play this on different computers it doesn't work but it plays okay on your Xbox.
You could try what I suggested to someone else in the following thread by transferring the .vro file to your computer first.
http://www.camcorderinfo.com/bbs/t118982.html
This will have the effect of Womble converting the file to MPEG2 (DVD) format which you could then view and see if it is garbled.
Have you tried burning one of the mpeg files you created to DVD and then viewing it on a standalone player? Someone else did this who had some distortion on the bottom when viewed on the computer and it disappeared on the DVD.
Please keep the thread informed so others can benefit by what works and doesn't

I have never noticed any problems with the nimo packs either and have been using them for quite some time. It was just a thought since thats really the only codec pack I have ever installed knowingly.
Actually, I am not trying to make any type of DVDs at this point. I just wanted to use my footage as mpeg (1 or 2) so I can edit it myself. The exported files are mpeg extension but I am not sure if its mpeg 1 or 2. I have tried the audio output as dolby digital and mpeg with the same results.
I read your post about the Womble software after doing a search on this site but have not tried it yet. I brought my camera to work to try this PC. I grabbed the charger, the cables, and the disc... oh the disc... I grabbed the one for my old capture card and not the camera... so I will have to try tomorrow if I don't find a solution for this tonight at my house.

The files created when you export from the camera are mpeg-2.
If you are looking to edit try Womble video wizard very easy to use.
