Microphone recommendation for new Sony DCR-DVD405 needed.
What Sony microphone do you recommend using with the new Sony DCR-DVD405 for recording loud live music (bar bands, etc)? The DCR-DVD405 built-in microphone/audio distorts too much when recording loud live music therefore I'm hoping a different microphone will solve the problem. What do you think, will this help? Also do the older Sony DCR-DVD403's have the same audio problem? Any and all help would be gratefully appreciated.

Before looking for another mic check that your cam has a mic jack. I can't find much info on the 505.
Good luck.

Hi Dennis, thank you very much for your help. I have the new 405 not the 505 and there is no microphone input jack other than what is supplied through the Active Interface Shoe.
Here is a 405 info link.

Did you try turning the volume down in the menu? It can help if the sound is over powering. If that does not work try the Sony ECM-HQP1 Surround Sound Microphone (if your cam has the same acc shoe as the 403) also the new mic will come with a sock for outdoor recording to virtually eliminate wind noise (which is a problem).

Thank you 403USER, I already tried the low microphone level setting but it didn't attenuate the audio signal level enough. I'll try the Sony ECM-HQP1 Surround Sound Microphone and see if that helps. Thank you for your help.
On another note - I just noticed the name of this forum is "Sound and Audio" lol, what's the difference? (Smile)

OK. Don't know where I got 505.
If your cam has no mic jack the only mics you will be able to use are Sony models that work with the proprietary hot shoe on the cam. I only see one on the Accessory page at the 405 link you gave. Looks like your choices are limited.
Another option is to record the sound to an external recorder like a Sony minidisc or iRiver device. Then you can use just about any mic you want.
Good luck.

There are four Sony microphone options for the DCR-DVD405 - the ECM-HQP1, EMC-HST1, ECM-HGZ1 and the ECM-HW1 so I was hoping to save myself some time and money by finding out what others here are using. Anyhow, thanks.

Since your questions are so specific to the 405 you might get some better results over in the Sony 405 Forum. I'm sure there's more 405 users there than there are here. I'm going to move this thread over there.
Good luck.

I use the Sony ECM-HQP1 Surround Sound Microphone on my 403, but I haven't had an occasion to use it under very loud (rock music) conditions.
Like another poster noted, it is virtually a requirement if you are going to be recording outside under breezy conditions.

Thank you for the tip about the outdoor wind noise problem and the need for a microphone windscreen.
Does the ECM-HQP1 sound any better than the DVD403 built-in microphone or do they sound about the same? Also, is the ECM-HQP1 signal level higher, lower, or about the same volume level as the DVD403 built-in microphone?
Thank you for your help.

Dennis, is it easy to sync the audio with the video and what software are you using to do it with? Thanks, Joe. :-)

Gigs sound and Syncing ,Mics
Using 803e I've used the inbuilt surround Mic and a Sonys gunzoom stereo mic that fits the hot shoe.I've only bothered with the gun for interviews, as you might expect it's a bit middley sounding.
I've had many of my gigs recorded on the 803e, indoor gigs are generally too loud even with the mic reflevel switched to low, outdoor gigs are okay if it's not windy.
What I do for the gigs is burn a 5.1 dvd then split the tracks out , record them into computer and remix it on a desk and Logic,
If there's been a recording (minidisk etc) straight off the mixer I'll mix that with 6 channels of cam sound. If the camera was moved in and out from the PA speaker more than 10meters as it's shooting you may have too cut the cam or direct audio track in places and adjust it time wise to resync it as the gig carries on.
Sync the direct pa minidisk feed to the camera sound in the audio mix and the visuals 2 sound relationship stays as the camera guy saw it..... but I did it the other way cos the band looks tighter!!!!
Now I put the new audio and original video into Nerovision, putting the video files sound on and tag on the mix I did, It takes a long time fiddlin the mix audio file backwards /forwards to get it to sync, (pre echoes, echoes then phasin then if your not mad your there).
Now mute the video file sound.and start editing the whole shebang , sometimes it's easier to export and then edit the new file.
(I'm now using Womble instead of Nero and it's so much better than nerovision, haven't done any gig editing since I found womble but I know it would all be easier in Womble)
If you haven't got a minidisc from the gig just try mixing and EQ ing the 6 channels of the inbuilt mic, with EQing and Compressing etc you'll get something that although it's overloaded is 10 times better than the original sound off the cam.
I so wish this camera had a headphonejack and a mic jack.
Anyone got a broken hot shoe mic and the pinout for the hot shoe plug on the cam???
Hey Ho
Pete

If the sound was better on the Sony DCR-DVD405 it would be a great camcorder but as it is the 405 is very limited.
