Anyone else have this problem????
During playback, there is an annoying 'chirping' sound that comes and goes. I did some troubleshooting and found when it is in 'standby' mode, it can be heard by putting your ear up to the disc drive door. When in 'record' mode, it comes about every 20 seconds & lasts for 6 seconds. Sounds like a rattling/grinding sound from the outside but sounds like a 'chirping' when the recording is played back. Very disrupting! Also very disappointing for an $1100 camcorder.
Will have to send it back to Sony for repair. Have only had it a month and used it for about 3 hours. The noise was there right from the start.
Anybody else have this problem, even with the 405????????????
Maybe just a defective unit.
Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes I do to. THe first one I bought had a grinding noise. 5 weeks in a repair shop later and sony sends me one with a buzzing noise. Same frequency, about 8 seconds every 18 seconds in HQ mode. Most dissappointing. Sony is willing to send me a microphone, but I'd rather have a working camera. I also recorded the noise using a floor model 405 in the store.

buzzing noise
It will take me several days before I can capture and email the noise. But I did buy one of the quietest DVD's that I surveyed ( I surveyed about 10 DVD 405 and some 505 cameras). The quietest turned out to be a DVD505. On my new camera the noise turned out to be there but not noticable. The noise sounds like a hiss or buzz for 6 seconds every 19 seconds.
