Question EVERIO GZ image quality

I have just purchased an EVERIO GZ-MG21 and I am rather disapointed by the video quality I get on the TV compared to what I used to get from my DV camcorder.
Does anyone know if the video quality of the GZ-MG77 is better thanks to its higher CCD or is it simply a drawbackof the Mpeg-2 coding ?

Thumbs down Very disappointing

I purchased a JVC Everio GZ-MG20 afew a months ago expecting it to be cutting edge technology but how wrong was I. The quality of the footage when transferred to DVD is woeful!!! In the manual & on JVC's website it says you get 4.5 hrs of DVD quality footage but this is not the case.
I initially thought that maybe it was the software that came with the camcorder or that my pc was not up to scratch so I took my PC into a local computer shop to have it looked at. They told me that there is no problem with my PC or the software it was the camera.
I cannot believe that having spent nearly £500 on a camcorder that the I don't get better quality recording. If anyone can shed any light on JVC's Everio camcorders either to say that they are no good or if I am doing something wrong when copying the footgage to DVD, I would be extremely grateful.

What do you mean by poor quality?

My MC500 produces video that I think is pretty darn good. Low light isn't too great but it's not so bad that people take notice.

ckl_88, I believe you have exposed the issue exactly... even if you didn't realize it.

The MC500 is the only 3CCD Everio camcorder (so far). The video quality is many times better than any Everio camcorder in the MG series, including the MG77. That means the MC500 is the ONLY Everio that can come close to shooting video that is Mini-DV quality.

Poor colors, grainy artifacts and horrible low light performance are traits that all MG series Everios share. The MG77 is a little better than the others, but not by much.

The MG series is obviously made for people who care more about convenience than video quality. If video quality is most important than the only options are to spend the extra cash for an MC500 or buy a Mini-DV camcorder.

I wish I had better news for those who've already purchased an MG series camcorder but that's just the way it is.

Arrow

I have a gz mg30, I have noticed that filming in auto-mode does not switch to surrounding conditions as it should. Selecting the applicable manual modes give a significant increase in quality, especially in low light conditions.

Although the camera results are still somewhat disappointing.

HD JVC video quality

I teach a video class at high school and we have 2 of the MG20's. The quality of the video is just as good as our mini-dv cameras. Low lighting does just as well as inexpensive mini-dv's. I copy the files from the USB drive and then use them in Premiere Pro. I do not use their editor. If the files are converted or used in other programs, they will only be as good as the settings allow.

Hope this helps. I am exploring the most efficient ways for my students to transfer/ convert and edit these files, and feel we are still in the infancy stage, but the quality is not an issue.

John
