What is the easiest or best way to get content into Avid Express DV from my Sony DCR-DVD300?

Im sorta lost at the moment trying to get my feet wet.

I don't know Avid sw. If it does not support mpeg2 format then I would convert the DVD300's VOB files into DV-avi format. Then your clips can be edited with ANY software.
To convert VOB to DV-avi you can use freeware virtualdub-mpeg2(http://fcchandler.home.comcast.net/stable/index.html ) together with a DV-codec. I can't provide a link for that codec but I know there is a free DV-codec available from panasonic, just google for it.
Also don't forget to install a AC3 codec in case your cam uses this format.
