The Sony consumer camcorders with infrared (IR) capabilities are generally considered the best but many have expected too much in a low cost system. Others have called it a "gimmick" or "cute". The novelty generally wears off quickly for many. Good photography requires adequate "illumination" for properly exposed images. This illumination can be in the form of normal lighting visible by the human eye or other forms of energy not visible to the human eye but visible to certain sensors which convert that energy into a form which we can see. Charged Coupled Devices (CCD's) used in camcorders tend to be sensitive to IR energy so most camcorders have internal IR blocking filters to eliminate images not natural to the human eye. Sony camcorders generally do well with IR modes as they physically move the IR blocking filter when in the IR mode. I believe the Panasonic AG-DVC30 also does the same as they have an actual IR mode.

I'm not aware of any other current consumer type camcorders which have IR capability.
