Sony Handycam TRV608 to TRV280

I purchased the 608 when they first came out in 1999. It has since quit working. Won't play or record. I still have my Hi8 tapes that I previously recorded on without means for playback to capture on my computer.

I purchased the TRV280 on ebay (got a great deal for it too) just for that purpose. Much to my surprise the 280 will not playback video recorded with the 608.

Is there a setting I need to change? Or are the two cameras simply different in their recording that they will not see eachothers recorded video?

I'm hoping there is a way to get around this otherwise I'm right back where I started with my old Hi8 tapes.

Thanks in advance... David.

According to the manual for the TRV280 on page 139 it shows it will only play back Digital8 video. Not all Digital8 camcorders play back analog Hi8 or 8mm video.

I agree with Rich. You bought the wrong model number. Starting in 2001 the low end model D8 in each year could not play analog recorded tapes. Here are the NTSC model numbers to avoid:
2001 - TRV130
2002 - TRV140
2003 - TRV250
2004 - TRV260
2005 - TRV280

In the beginning (1999 & 2000) all D8 models could playback analog recorded tapes but apparently Sony felt that everyone didn't need that feature so they pulled it out of their cheapest model, starting in 2001.

In 2006 there were no new D8 model numbers so it looks like that is the end of the D8 camcorder line. The TRV280's that remain in 2006 appear to be those that were made in 2005 but did not sell out. It's companion model TRV480 in 2005 could play analog recorded tapes but they apparently sold out in 2005?

Can these low-end models playback tapes recorded by their counterparts from other years? Specifically, will 2005's 280 play tapes recorded on 2003's 250? I keep seeing differing answers as to if this will work or not. I need to replace my 250 with something that will play it's recorded tapes.
