Hi all,

Yes I have digitized some old Hi-8 video using this method and it turned out very good. I did purchase and use the accessory cable that is s-video capable as well.

I've done this twice, and each time I've encountered problems. To clarify things, I took the mini disk out of the camcorder, put it into my home DVD player, and dubbed to a new mini disk in my camcorder from the home device. The problem I have is that the end result was lot's of room echo, and pretty weird sound. I'm thinking that because the original disk was being played back in Dolby 5ch, and then being re-recorded with dolby 5ch, is probably the cause of my problems. Other problems I noticed, and this is probably particular to my home device is that when I'm dubbing to my camcorder from the home device, if I set the volume on the home device to a comfortable level, the recorded disk ends up with a very low volume output which means that the volume control on my home device is 'active' even via the output jacks. Finally, and this is a no brainer...............remember to turn the date/time display function off when recording either on the original disk, or on the final destination disk or it get's doubled.
Note: my experience was with the normal ac jacks and not the optional s-cable option.

So when you do this (those of you who have done it) are you limited to 20 minutes?

I only ask because I get about a gig per hour of mpeg when using my PC capture card.

You're still limited to 20 min HQ, 30 SP and 60 LP. For recording from VCR, I found SP was good enough, maybe even LP would have looked OK, but I didn't try it.

Thanks for sharing all your experience.
Just wondering if I have an Laser Disc that is one hour long, I may have to split it 3 times under the highest quality recording. In this case, would I start and stop recording just like any other recording, and finalise if before popping into the DVD player?
And to combine these 3 DVDs (since one hour and 20 min per DVD recording in HQ mode, what software can I use that is user friendly and fuss free? Care to elaborate more on the Dolby 5.1 concerns that I have to watch out for because I think all Laser Disc were only Dolby Digital then, so I hope the audio conversion is done correctly as well.

Thanks in advance.

Michael

Sorry to have revisted this post after almost one year...

To update users of the 405, I got the cables to transfer analog source to the camcorder, it does not work, as it was in PAL mode and I was informed that unless my device is in pal format, it will not work...so problem is, I get audio, but no video...

Regards,
michael
