Try clicking the recessed "Reset" button somewhere on the camcorders side.

That might work.

Same problem here.

Two guys at the sonyhdvinfo forum reported same problem. Both of them talk about water/humidity. My HC1 is not exposed to water or humidity though.

Resetting the HC1 does not solve the problem. So, it's not a software issue.

Now, when I power on the HC1 a white screen appears for 2 seconds before the blue screen. That didn't happen when it worked fine.

When turning the LCD completely upside down and folding it back to the camcorder's body, the menu works fine again.

Any help will be appreciated.

Sorry to hear about that... I have no clue what might be wrong.
(fortunately for me, my display has been working so far... and I use it a lot for setting white balance, shutter speeds, etc...)

Indeed, the touchscreen menu is too frequently used for a fragile LCD panel. Camera Color, White Balance, WB shift and Shutter Speed are functions I always need to tweak when shooting.

Today I left my HC1 at an authorized Sony tech. They asked me if i used to manipulate tha LCD panel too frequently, cause it seems to be a wiring problem with flipping LCDs, which sometimes wear away after frequent use.

Tomorrow they'll tell me what the possible solutions are. I hope they're not too expensive.

lol ... (sorry.. this isn't really a laughing issue)... but... "Too Frequently!!!".

It's like.. yeah... I DO USE it : )

If that 'is' the case.. then I hope mine acts up before my extended warranty is up.

When they say 'flip' though, do they mean 'flipping it 180 degrees, and then placing it back against the cam?'

-- edit --

I wouldn't mind hearing what they find/do though, if you don't mind posting the results.. I hope it isn't too much $ either : )

You're right, James.

I'm not particularly LCD dependant, I shoot with the VF a lot. Also, when you find that many functions only available on the touchscreen menu, I think it must be sturdy enough to resist the use (which will be obviously frequent, and never TOO frequent). My HC1 is less than a year old and I'm very careful when handling it, and very rarely flipped the LCD 180 degrees.

2 hours ago the tech called me and said the ribbon cable (it's the FP-259 flexible) was broken and some parts of a circuit card were also injured due to a short circuit produced by the broken ribbon.

Now i'm waiting another call to know how much is it and how long will it take to be repared.

BTW i found this thread about the same problem, which was very helpful:

thanks for the update (and that other thread!)

I think I've been pushing the limits on mine... I'm not exactly the most "delicate" person when handling stuff, and just a few weekends ago, I was shooting an event when the sky begun to let down a light rain.
(actually wondering if the rain had mucked up my 'mic'... cause audio seems a bit distorted/clipped, but it might have been doing that before the exposure to the elements)

James,

As far as I know, you must avoid letting your camcorder get in touch with water. I've read in some forum threads, users have reported critical malfunctions due to water or humidity.

Well, back to the topic, the reparation will be $95 and it will be ready tomorrow. That's good news to me.

95 dollars seems like a great deal!!!
(... considering what some things like that 'could' cost)

Probably still much more than the actual cost.. but nice to know they aren't taking us to the cleaners on this type of repair.

James,

I just got my HC1 back from repair, sooner than i expected. I'm glad to say it works perfect now.

Just wanted to say thanks for being there, and be aware this seems to be a very common issue. The tech just told me many users (not only sony, but also canon and jvc) show up frequently with this same problem. But now you know it's easy to fix, so don't panic.

Have a good day.
