SR1 vs SR7 - The Beginning
Good Day!
Ok, so the debate I've had with myself continues over the SR1 and SR7. The pros I find are described below:
SR1:
- 3.5 inch screen
- multi function ring
SR7:
- x.v colour (xvYcc)
- optical image stabilization
- larger hard drive
- Variable Bit Rate
- Sensor similar to that of the HC7
I guess it depends on how bad one wants that larger screen and the multi function ring.
The biggest thing to me as well is video quality comparisons. If the SR1 starts going on sale everywhere dropping in price substancially to the SR7 and the video quality is the same, then I might go for the SR1. However, after looking at the video clips on impress watch Japan, I find that the SR7 is considerably better than the SR1.

SR1: http://www.watch.impress.co.jp/av/d...20/zooma273.htm

What are your thoughts?!
Thanks!

Awesome link!
I wanted to see the difference between SR1 and SR7...
Is there any link or video sample with fast motion on the HV20 vs SR7 (or any AVCHD)?
There seems to be a few camcorder websites that say AVCHD can't handle fast motion that well.
I plan on getting the SR7 as soon as it comes out and I'll be posting some video clips when I figure it all out.

Hey CanadianKorean, are you in Canada or Korea? The pricing for the SR7 has been released in Korea and it's discusting.
I'll have to buy it in Canada I think. The SR1 is a little cheaper in Korea though.
Impress watch should have HV20 clips as well, just search for them

I'm in Canada.
I'm waiting for the June 12 release date.
The price here is $1500CDN...
I was going to buy an HV20 but most likely will go with SR7 because it is HDD based and I prefer that than rewinding...

According to Best Buy USA, it's around the 16th or so of July.
Anyone have any thoughts on the two camcorders?
SR1 vs SR7?
Thanks

As far as I can tell, the SR1 vs. SR7 is just:
- SR7 has a smaller LCD screen
- SR7 has x.v.color, which should improve color depth
- SR7 has optical image stabilization, and I think the SR1 is digital
That's it?

Release date
According to SonyStyle the SR7 will be released on June 13th
Sonystyle.com
If this holds, then we wont have to wait much longer!

But also right below that it says
"Pre-sale item available on or about 06/30/2007. We will notify you by email. Your account will be billed when product ships."
Also will it be 1399 everywhere or will it be able to be had for a hundred or two less? I'm trying to decide between this and the HV20, and the HV20 would therefore be quite a bit cheaper...it just has so many problems that I find annoying.

Well I pre-ordered the SR7 tonight as Sony now says on or before June 13th. I don't know how many pre orders they have but I hope I'm in the first shipment. I doubt to many ordered under the old end of July date.

True, but I think the sensor plays a big part as well. The low light might not be as good, but in the daylight, from the two comparisons, it appears the SR7 is significantly better than the SR1... so much so that my wife noticed a difference and looked quickly at the two clips.
I hope it comes soon!
Thanks for the info!

What are the real requirements for AVCHD playback and AVCHD editing?
Everyone is throwing out these requirements but none are definite.
I have a AMD 64 3700+ with 1GB with an NVIDIA 6600GT.
Yet it plays choppy in Windows Media.
It plays very well in PowerDVD 7.2 if the file isn't too large.
What is the real deal here?

I'm not familiar with the AMD processors -- heck I'm not familiar with the newer Intel (Core 2) stuff either.
In my limited tests, HDV (MPEG2 -- not AVCHD MPEG4) appears to play-back with no noticeable stutters on a 3.4GHz P4ht and 2GB DDR RAM, using Windows Media Player.
Same video can NOT be smoothly previewed in Sony Vegas Movie Studio Platinum -- there seems to be too much editor overhead for smooth preview.
Conversion/compression of a 7 minute HDV clip to WMV9 (which codec recommends a minimum of 3GHz P4 for /display/) took three hours.
AVCHD MPEG4 requires even more processing power to decode or encode than HDV MPEG2.
If you've got enough disk space, you could transcode the MPEG to some form of HD AVI (about 80GB/hour) and then edit the AVI format. At the end, render it back to some other compressed format.

I have a P4 3.2 + 2GB RAM and playback of .m2ts files with the onboard video uses about 80-90% of CPU.
I then put a Radeon X1950pro video card in and that dropped the CPU use to 60%.
The new Radeon drivers for the X1950 support H.264 decode acceleration.
I also have a dual core 2.8GHz and that uses less power but overheats so I gotta cool it some more first b4 I can work out how much better it is than the P4.
