distortion on TV screen?
I've noticed in editing a slideshow that whenever you can see any of the black background behind the pictures (for example, when pan/zooming on a portrait oriented picture and there are black bars on the left and right sides) that when I watch it on my external preview monitor (or a TV) there is a bending of the image on the sides. Here is an example of the phenomena:

Any idea what causes this? When I watch the video in Premiere Pro's preview window, or as an exported movie on my computer screen, it looks fine. This just happens when watching on a TV.

TV tube type? Curved screen?
Part of the effect may just be that you are looking too closely at the screen -- you are seeing the curve of the tube.
Otherwise: the TV may be due for alignment checks -- you may be suffering barrel or pincushion distortions.

the screen
The screen itself is flat, and the distortion is noticeable from a decent viewing distance. Also, it's a brand new TV.

TV is bad. I had the same thing here when my tv monoter went bad. I just replaced it. The best way to check is just burn off a DVD and check it else where.

Looks like a combination of barrel and trapezoidal distortion.
Barrel should be correctable with the alignment controls (buried inside), but I'm not sure about trapezoidal.
Hypothesis:
Could be a power-supply weakness -- the beam is "off" during the vertical retrace, then "on" during the horizontal; some sort of surge current might be causing the beam to sweep at a different rate until some maximum and then stabilize on the way down (with the increase in "down" control voltage resulting in a loss in the horizontal, hence the tapering look once you get past the top quarter)
In ancient days, it was commonly recommended that the purchase of a color TV include an alignment/color convergence adjustment by a service tech IN THE FINAL INSTALLED LOCATION, and that this service visit be repeated any time the TV was relocated... They used to be that sensitive to environmental electrical/magnetic fields!

I have 2 TVs of this brand and style, one is 27" and one is a smaller 19" that I use as a preview monitor. The distortion occurs on both, but only when there is an edge of some kind near the side..such as the black space between a portrait oriented picture and the side, or a decorative border on a DVD menu. So weird.

This might be kind of late but do you have black video behind it or is the photo just over blank space? Sometimes that causes me problems. Any time there is going to be black, like behind a picture, or inbetween you should put black video underneath or between it. File>New>Black Video
