Yes it's a long shot but that's because you are trying to solve the wrong problem.
Just about all the DVD cams on the market cannot be recognised as external optical devices by any operating system. Thats the way the manufacturers have made them. Generally their own proprietary software ONLY will do it.
Your Sony cannot even be reliably recognised by most pcs in this manner to allow a transfer. You would have to use the Sony software as well BUT!
Sony admit to NO Mac support at all.
So, the real problem for you is, what software can I use to rip my own 8cm DVD's to my computer in a usable format (MPEG2) AFTER I finalise and place the disc in the DVD tray of my Mac.
I don't know the answer but at least with the right question you may get a result.

Lance is at least partially right: I once tried to get capture some footage off a sony DVD camcorder for a friend and I failed. It was very frustrating but it was exactly like he said, I could not get the PC to recognize the camera. I was quite dissapointed as the camera was very user-friendly and had a nice interface on the display screen, but it just didn't seem to have been intended for data transfer to a computer.
