VFL-1 flash won't work ???

Just received my VFL-1 Canon Vidoe Flash Light in the mail today, hooked it up to my Canon Optura 60 and can not get the flash to work at all. I would think that with the Canon "Advancd Acessory Shoe" it would just take the place of the built in "flash and video light". Meaning, when the VLF-1 is hooked up shouldn't I be able the control the video light on the VLF-1 with the very same button I control the built-in video light with? Presently the only way I can get the Video light on the VLF-1 to come on is with the button in the back of it. Also, the Flash on the VLF-1 does not seem to work period.

With the VLF-1 button set to on, and the Optura 60 set for flash or auto flash and with it Optura's "mode dial" set to "Auto". I get no flash form the VLF-1 or the built-in flash on the Optura 60. The same happens when the VLF-1 button is set to Auto.

With the button on the VLF-1 set to off I get a flash from the built in flash bulb on the Optura 60.

You might say, it's as if the Camera does not even know the VLF-1 is present.

What am I doing wrong? Is it a bad Flash/Vidoe lLight?

Any help from anyone would be greatly apreciated. Thank you

It should turn on and off automatically. Try it in a dark area. Also it may be related to the night mode settings.

Ended up calling Canon's Tech Support (to my surprise a very, very helpful tech. support) considering the Optura 60 is no longer in production. Many, many outfits don't offer tech support on out of production items. Anyway, they went through some processes with me and concluded the this VLF-1 was defective, so I'm returning it to Amazon.com for an exchange.

Sent back the defective flash about 4 days ago, got the new replacement today (talk about lightening fast, that Amazon's okay!). Hooked it up, tried it out; Everything works perfectly!!!

Isn't it amazing how a brand new item that you've purchase for the first time ever can throw you off. Man... I was thinking maybe the camera was defective in some way or maybe the accessory shoe was screwed up or some unforseen problem was at hand.

You just don't always expect a spanking brand new, off the shelf, shrink wrapped, tightly packaged, completely sealed and never opened item to be defective.

Seriously, I really thought there was an good posibility that this flash was likely to have the same problems. It probably had something to do with the camera being bought used and the flash being brand new. But I have to say in all honesty, who ever previously owned this camera took unbelievably excellent care of it, there is not one single scratch or chip or anything on this camera. It could easily sell for new if you put the sticker on it.

Nevertheless, I'm exstatically overjoyed that everything works perfectly with the external flash. Thanks all

Yes. I know the feeling. I have even gotten paranoid about it to a certain extent. I plan on how long is it going to take me to return or get this item fixed. I have just had a run of bad luck in the past few years. Not on high tech camera gear etc, but simple items, like a pair of shoes, a toaster etc. I get home after a shopping spree only to find out all these simple things are defective.

Glad your stuff is working.
