Unhappy Canon Optura 50, sudden issue turning on

I've purchased the refurbished Optura 50 about 8 months ago and it was working flawlessly.
I would occasionally get the part where the extra flash attaches to the camera overheat a little, but it wasn't causing problems.

then, 2 days ago, I left my camcorder plugged in with dv/power cables and needed to recharge a battery, so I took it out and put it on my charger.

after I inserted it back into the camera, I went outside to shoot something, but the camera wouldn't start. I tried to unplug battery, recharge and start again, but it just won't do anything. For a milisecond when I insert the battery, I get a blink on the power led in the camera and I sort of hear some mechanical noise for a moment, but trying to turn it on, nothing happens.
When I tried removing the tape, nothing happens either. I tried plugging in the external AC source, but nothing again.

Usually, I had to have a partially or fully charged battery in order to operate the camera with AC adapter, but now it acts like the battery is empty or something.

So I can't figure out whether the problem is with the camera itself or if it's my battery/charger. I think I had some charge left in the battery before I put it on the charger, but since I'm using a cheap non-canon charger, it sometimes gives me mixed signals (like normally it shows red for 'charging' and green for 'charged' but sometimes it just shows green). this time it kept showing as green all the time, as if the battery was already charged.
so I'm also curious if it;s possible that somehow, the charged discharged the entire battery and maybe refused to charge it now?

if so, is there a way to test if the battery is full/empty?
does anybody else have or had similar problems and knows the solution?

up until now, the camera worked well.

thanks for any help and your time for reading this.

Anton
