video/audio editing software? I have dc40

Hi all. Nice forum here. I recently bought a canon dc40 dvd cam. I was just wondering what would be the best software to edit video. I would like to edit the video in scenes and/or remove and add a new audio track. Now, how would I do this? Do I upload the video straight from the cam/dvddisc to my computer? Is there a program that I could upload from cam/dvddisc to pc in any format I wish that can be easily editable? (Or just encode/edit after upload) Lets say, xvid or mpeg. Just looking for suggestions here guys.
Thanks for any replies.
