Have you tried calling Canon service?

Anyway, chances are it will be cheaper to download it and print it out. You can print double sided, and since you only need it in one language it will only be 158 pages instead of the 320 page bilingual stock manual.

I think you've made a great choice for a camcorder for your project. The GL2 produces excellent footage, and in addition to the complete manual controls, there are some very useful auto exposure modes for special situations like the quartz field.

Do you have some money for a tripod and some audio equipment? Be sure to think of audio. If you're going to sell your product, the audio has to be better than you can get with the camera's built in microphone.

I had a U9000 and didn't like it. It suffered from "stiction," a little jump that you get (and you can see in the video) when you first start a pan because the head is slightly stuck in its rest position. Yours may be okay. But if you can return it, for the same money you can get a Velbon Videomate 607, which most people like for the money.

The mics you're talking about are called lavaliere or "lav" mics. They can be wired mics with long cables or wireless mics that come with a body pack transmitter and a receiver that attaches to the camera. You'll certainly need a lav at ten feet outside.

Playing tapes on the GL2 is not a problem, but rewinding should be avoided. You can get a tape rewinder for about $25.

B&H's online catalog is a good place to look at all this stuff. bhphotovideo.com.
