Many people don't know that they qualify for educational discounts. Sony Vegas and Avid Liquid (not Avid Xpress) have the most liberal policy of all.

As of this writing, households with any student, from preschool through full or part time college student, including home schooled, can get a copy of Sony Vegas 7 + DVD Production Suite for $270.

There are a number of educational discount houses online. I don't want to promote one above the other, so do a Google search on "academic software."
