window vista and firewire
i have a JVC GR-D33U, connected to dell dimension E521 with a AMD 64 athlonX2 processer. i'm currently running VISTA home premium.
my problems is when i opened up Windows Movie player and tried to "Record" some of the video I had recorded, the preview pane is blank with no audio through the PC, even though it is playing on the camcorder while connected. However, what baffles me is that the buttons on the computer to play, rewind, etc do function in that the camcorder responds to these directions. I have also tried "capturing" with ulead dvd movie factory 6 with the same results. The JVC website is aweful with no help for driver updates, etc. Is there something really easy I'm missing?
here 's the killer, using the same recorder and pc but with XP sp2 on it everthing worked.

Your description is identical to my situation except that I have an HP computer. I to can capture on an XP machine but not on the Vista PC.
I contacted HP Support and they said that the problem is that the driver that is being used is a generic one for this type of hardware (DV camcorder) and that it apparently does not work properly for this camera. It does handle the camcorder controls OK but not the video/audio transfer. Another support person (not at HP) said it may be a codec problem but that is unlikely since the video display in the capture window uses raw video from the camera before any coding is done to create a file.
I searched the JVC web site for a driver but found none. I emailed their Support department today but have not received any reply. If you learn anything new, please let me know and vice versa.
Well, at least I know I am not alone.

I'd be surprised if you did find one... It would probably be W9x era.
WinXP and Vista both come with Generic M$ OHCI Firewire drivers and video capture support -- and apparently the Vista update has lots of problems.

How does the problem get fixed?
Who's responsibility is it to fix the problem; Microsoft, JVC, etc.? It would seem that there are a lot of customers out there with DV camcorders that have this problem.
I am asking to know where to inquire and look for an update

i guess not enough people have this problems for the OEMs to do something or guide us. or the people having the problem are not posting in the correct areas.

Have you explored M$ support site yet?
Here's one item, though it may not be applicable in all cases (Sincy your camera seems to be "enumerated")
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927827
This one sounds closer to the reported symptoms, but no response to it yet (other than the identification of a Firewire chipset)
http://www.microsoft.com/communitie...ng=en&cr=US&p=1
If you have a similar Firewire host controller chip, it may be a problem from that chip maker.

Thanks for the MS references. I checked them out and replyed to second one to get more information.
I'm not sure what "Enumeration" means/implies in this context. If the device is not enumerated, would I still be able to control the camcorder (which I can) even though the video does not get transfered?

I did say the first may not applicable <G>
"Enumeration" is when the hardware scans the busses looking for devices that are connected.

I have a Dell Inspiron 530. Probably the FireWire camera OP got is the same one. I have another Dell (2 years+ old shipped with FireWire option) and the cards are the same. AGERE chipset and somewhere in them it mentions they are Adaptec cards.
The problem is the AGERE driver in Vista. For some reason it's not working with the JVC cameras. I had an old ALI chipset (USB2/Firewire combo card) from a CompUSA special 4+ years ago, and that one works fine. It's recognized by Vista as 'Generic' OHCI compliant.
Now, note that the AGERE card works with no problems under XP SP2. But how the heck can we convince MS to fix it ?
I have not tried to modify the INF file to see if it would be recognized any differently. The enumeration registry key did not work for me.
I found earlier a reference to a HotFix 1394 driver, which I will try next, but not too confident.
I would leave the ALI card, but would loose my firewire front panel connector, and also somehow the card cause the computer to reboot instead of poweroff (found a couple of bent pins on a USB port, so it could be faulty).
