Insufficient information...

What model camera? Or, at least: tape/disk/dvd? Firewire or USB? What operating system? (Windows Vista has a few reported problems with Firewire device detection and/or chipsets)

If a tape camera, better be using Firewire -- most all NLEs capture via Firewire, the USB is only for still images on a memory card (and those appear as a drive under "My Computer"). Hard drive cameras may appear as a drive also -- or require using the camera software to transfer cryptic file formats on camera into usable file types on the computer.

The error messages would seem to indicate that the camera is not registered on a Firewire port, or if it is connected to the port, it has not been turned to the "playback" position.
