xlr option

Hello everyone. I've been reading this forum (lurking) for quite awhile.
I've finally joined the DVC30 club; it's on it's way from Californian now.
I've noticed a bit of discussion on the xlr vs stereo mic.
I'm thinking of going with this option, that way you can still use the cameras audio level control.

Any thoughts on this? Advantages, disadvantages?
Thanks everyone.

Just make sure you have the right kind of adapter. Some mics (Audio Technica AT822, for example) are stereo, but have an XLR-style fitting and use an adapter like the one you've shown to transmite the stereo signal from the mic to the stereo mini-plus. A mono balanced XLR to stereo mini-plug would be wired differently.

This mic adapter transfers mono signals into stereo sound.
I should have posted this photo as well.

(edit) Does the DVC30 supply the phantom power for the mic?.
I don't have the camera yet, it's still in the shipping process.
Thanks
