DCR-TRV900 for a modest independent film maker?

Hi, I was hoping I could get some advice about buying a TRV900. I am traveling to New Zealand for a year and hope to make a documentary. My camera budget is a bit impoverished, but I was hoping to get the best 3 ccd, manual driven, portable mini-DV Sony camera out there selling for less than $1,000 (and perhaps between $600 and $900.) This most likely means buying a camera that is more than a few model years old, and from the reviews I've read the TRV-900 seems to fit the bill.

My filming conditions will probably be mostly outdoors and something light-weight, portable, and durable with an easy-to-manage storage system and mic input for interviews would be best. I've had good luck with my Sony still cameras (one even surviving a bumpy ride down the Coliseum steps.)

The bottom line: Is the TRV900 recommended for someone with my needs? Is it wise to invest in an older camera? What price should I expect to pay? (Should I be wary of items selling on ebay that have items, such as the remote, missing?)

I've also looked into the TRV950, but have stayed away as it is said to have a sensitive zoom and, being newer, is probably a bit more expensive. Corrections and advice welcome. Thanks!
