sony pc55 input compatibility

Hello guys,

I have 2 camcorders
1) sony pc55
2) jvc grd72

and I have 1 pinhole camera that I use for my motorbike helmet.
( CAM-790CP: 1/3" Sony EXview HAD CCD, 600TVL, 0.005lux, CCIR/EIA) that is a black and white 600tvl lens.

The problem is that when I attach my this camera to the imput of my jvc and I use my minidv to record videos taken by the pinhole camera, everything is fine, eventhougt on the jvc lcd u can see a black line , that someone told me is due to the fact that the jvc lcd does not have enough resolution to display the correct quality of the image. The important thing is that the jvc minidv record the videos from my black and white pinhole

instead .

when I attache the black and white pinhole lens to my sony pc55 input, the lcd appears black and even if I record , nothing get recorded by the sony minidv.

Why there is so such difference beetween the jvc and sony input compatibility ??
thank u

1. You may not have connected it properly. See pages 56 and 58 of the manual.

2. You may have turned "DV ->DV OUT" to on. It must be turned off to record to tape. See page 51.

Can you explain this a bit better?

On the LCD? In the viewfinder? In the video transfered to the computer. Is this a verticle or horizontal line. Where is it. How many pixels wide is it?

I can't think of anything else unless you are trying to use a PAL pinhole camera with an NTSC PC55 or visa versa.

Thank u,
as far as you know.
Is there any firmware update for the pc55??
thank u

Maybe I was thinking that the problem is due to the CCIR/EIA system of the pinhole.
Maybe the pc55 does not support it
thank u

I am not aware of any firmware updates for the PC55.

Your pinhole camera may be bad or may not output a proper video signal. You could test your PC55 with the video output from a TV or VCR.

Hi Poncho,
u were right, the problem is that the 600tvl lens is PAL , and the 420 tvl lens is NTSC .
My pc55 is NTSC , so it reads the 420tvl , but it does not recognize the 600tvl.

What is really starnge and I can NOT explain at all is :

why my jvc that is NTSC , can recognize both the PAL and NTSC lenses ??

I mean , it seams strange to me that the JVC minidv has inside a pal to ntsc or ntsc to pal converter......

By the way , do u know if they sell Pal to NTSC video box converter that are portable ??
I Mean the one that I saw needs 110 or 220 volt power supply.
Does it exists something that can support packs of rechargable batteries as power supply ??

Do u have any idea about the mistery of my jvc ???
thank u

marcolisi:

I do not have any recent experience with PAL/NTSC converter boxes, so I don't know how well they work.

Some camcorders can display PAL or NTSC on the LCD display and some can output an analog conversion. Many times it will not work with Firewire. Just too many different combinations have been released over the years.

There are not many current camcorders which are PAL/NTSC capable. I can not think of the models of which ones can, one of the current pro-sumer Sony's are PAL/NTSC capable.
