TRV460 Firewire to Analog Question
Can the Sony TRV460 be used to passthrough a firewire video input signal to the analog video output? I want to use the TRV to dsiplay the output of Sony Vegas8 onto a TV monitor.
I can't get it to work. If anyone could tell me how or tell me it can not be done, I'd appreciate it. Thanks.

It should work
Computer ---> firewire ---> camcorder ---> S-vid/RCA ---> TV
I don't recall the settings on Vegas.
Try with no tape in your TRV460
Try with AV -> DV turned on in your TRV460

Thanks poncho,
I can't seem to find any settings to turn on "DV --> AV". Any hints which menu that is in?

On my TRV830 which is 3 years older than your 460, place the mode switch in the VCR position. Press the MENU button and rotate the thumb wheel down one position to VCR SET. It is the bottom selection in that menu called A/V > DV OUT. Push the thumb wheel and scroll down to that selection. It will probably say OFF which is the setting you want. If you set it to ON the camcorder will convert analog video and audio coming in on the RCA and S-Video jacks to firewire data going out the firewire port.
I suspect your 460 will have the same menu.

TRV460 pass through
I have been reading many of the posts on converting my old Sony 8mm and VHS-C cassetes to a digital image for preservation and editing.
After seeing posts concerning which 8mm cameras included the pass through analog to digital conversion and reading many of the reviewers good experience with the TRV460, I purchased one and started the conversion.
The first step, converting my Sony 8mm tapes went well, not perfect, but I expected some lines at the bottom and a few dropped frames from reading the reviews and was just glad that I could get what I did.
After that I purchased a VHS-c adapter for use in my VHS player, loaded a cassette, connected the VHS machine to the TRV460 with the component RCA jacks into the mini plug on the 460, and connected the 460 to my PC via firewire cable.
I have tried taking an 8mm tape out, putting one in, starting, re-starting, and setting the A/V - DV out to the "on" position, but can not get the image from the VHS machine to show up on either the camera display or the capture screen in MS movie maker. It does not seem logical that the 8mm conversion would have worked, but the pass through feature would not, unless there is a problem with the mini jack, which seems unlikely.
This seems to be a setting, or connection issue, but I do not know what else to change or test. Sony's manual does not really discuss the pass through feature, except to say "see computer applications manual" which did not come with the pre-owned camera that I purchased. This manual is not available that I can find on Sony's website.
Can anyone offer any other suggestions?
Thanks,
Patrick

Patrick:
Some common solutions for "Pass through":
1. Do not have a cassette in the camcorder.
2. Power the camcorder from AC, not just the battery.
3. Use I use WinDV or DVIO to transfer, both are free small utilities, some software will not work with "pass through":

http://www.carr-engineering.com/dvio.htm
4. You must have AV ->DV OUT set to on.
5. Make absolutely sure you are using the output of your VCR which is always on the back of the unit. The connectors on the front of VCR's are Inputs and will not work for what you are trying.
6. Read this thread: http://www.camcorderinfo.com/bbs/t110388.html

Rich,
Thanks, I am getting closer. Settings are as you say.
Tape is out. Loaded both utilities that you suggested.
Still no image on the LCD or the capture preview feature in WinDV.
I reset the video camera with the small button on the side and started over. This time, I can at least get some audio. The connection between the VHS and the 460 was suspect, so I tested it on another monitor. VHS audio and video is leaving the VHS machine fine.
Now, I can hear the audio portion, but no picture on the LCD screen. Then, I tried a tape in the 460 to see if I could record onto a tape. The audio portion records, scratchy, but does record. The video is a solid tan screen, nothing else.
Thoughts.....

Patrick,
I don't know.
Does the camcorder work normally?
Can you record from VHS to tape?
Can you transfer from the 460 to computer with Firewire?
If those do not work then pass through is not going to work.
Do not confuse the A/V -> DV setting. It must be on to use pass through. It must be off to record to tape.
