I just got a new XHA1 and have tried to find this answer in the manual so please bear with me if this is a simple fix. I have need to sometime record in standard 4:3 format. I made a tape, but it will not playback in the camera lcd. The message says playback std locked...I went to the menu, but that option was darkened out as if it were not available. Can anyone help a newbie out on this? thanks

Did you get this resolved? I can't see why that would happen...? Have you tried taking the tape out and changing the setting? (auto should work). The tape was recorded by the camera right?

I don't know what I did, but it is now working. I have found the Canon manual a bit lacking in some areas for someone like me with little video experience. I am considering one of the books written by independent sources. Anybody have advice on which one is best? Thanks for your reply.
