Question transfering mini dv to my PC

Hello
I have a 7 yr old sony PC5E, mini dv cam corder. I don't remember getting any software with it-if I did-it's lost!

I am trying to put some video from the mini dv tape onto my PC for editing (PC has MS movie maker/nero digital/canon movie software) however the camcorder is not recognised by the pc when I connect via firewire. Do I need to install any software? Any suggestions would be most welcome.

Thanks Paull

Microsoft Movie Maker should be able to transfer the video.

Almost every editing program will work.

You do not need any software from Sony.

I use WinDV to do the transfer of video. DVIO is another good utility. They are both easy; small; free and do not use a lot of computer resources: Easy Capture Program

If you have Vista you may have problems.

Your camcorder should be detected after the Firewire has been plugged in and then turned on. Normally to the VCR/VTR mode.
