External Stereo Recording

I'm a happy owner of an A1 but have hit a snag. Normally I use the XLR module with a shotgun mic for my videos. The module setting is CH1-CH2 which puts the mono audio from the mic on both audio tracks of the tape. This is fine. Now I'm going to video a small live band and want to use 2 external hand-held mics for stereo recording. I have set the XLR module Input 1 to CH1 and connected the 2 XLR mics to Inputs 1 & 2. During the test recording, I can hear the left and right mics in the headphones left and right channels. However, when I play back the recorded tape, only the left channel (CH1) can be heard. Nothing from the right channel (CH2), which I assume means no audio is recorded on the other audio track. I have tried all the settings I can find, but no luck. Em I defective, or maybe the hardware?
I also noticed that in Standard Set there is a setting for "EXT SUR MIC". This setting is greyed out and the default is "Wide Stereo". I can not change it to plain "Stereo". (Pg 59 in the User Guide"). Could this have anything to do with my problem and is this setting only active when a surround sound mic is attached?
Thanks for any help!
