HDR-HC9 - Video Noise

Hello,

I recently purchased the HDR-HC9 camcorder and from what I can tell so far its a very nice fully loaded camcorder with lots of manual options. I am fairly new to the camcorder world but try to keep up with the latest technology and terminology.

Last night I was testing its performance in indoor settings, and outside at night. I live in the city so I was focusing on city lights and the night sky from my apartment. I notice that when I panned across dark areas or the sky itself you could see a lot of blue dots which I assume is video noise. I tried turning down the exposure which helped a little but didn't completely get rid of it. Is there any way that when I film either black objects, or in darker settings that I don't get video noise? And just the color I'm looking at.

This camcorder has a lot of manual settings which I haven't gone through much of them yet. I will be doing a lot of indoor filming (bands at bars, indoor parties)

Any advice you have is appreciated.

If it's like the others in the HC series, you need to switch to manual exposure, and then dial down at least 4 notches from the right, preferably 6. Anything above 9dB of gain will be very noisy.

Also it is rumored that if you choose the SUNSET & MOON setting, the cam locks gain at no more than 9 dB.

Thanks,

Adjusting the exposure settings worked. I tried the sunset and moon setting but everything was too orange/red for indoors. Adjusting the exposure worked just fine for getting rid of the extra noise in dark conditions.
