Best MPEG file editing software?

Now that I am able to rename the .mod files to .MPG using the SD copy thingy...what software is best for editing the mpg videos and producing shoirts for email or burning to vcd or dvd?

I am using XP and when I try to import a mpeg file to the Movie Maker program I get this error message:

"This file C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\My DEocuments\My Videos\20080223_172600.MPG cannot be imported because the codec required to play the file is not installed on your computer. If you have already tried to download and install the codec, close and restart Windows Movie Maker, and then try to import the file again".

So it sounds like if I can get the codec I will be able to import, edit and produce the mfile in Windows Movie Maker, eh?

Soooowhere do I get the codec? Is there like a codec store or what?

The XP version of Windows Movie Maker will not edit MPEG-2 files properly.

Indeed, Ulead Video Studio 11 Plus is good, I am using that, I have all the editing software, like Adobe Premiere Pro CS3, Sony Vegas Pro. But I would say I am very much comfortable with CyberLink's "PowerDirector 6", indeed it is great software very easy to use! For me CS3 Pro & Sony Vegas is very complicated and hard too! For beginner "PowerDirector 6" is fantastic, and available at very reasonable price!

Pinnacle vs Cyberlink

I have been using Pinnacle 11 soft. on my old computer, then now with the new one i'm started using Cyberlink that came with cam. So I like it so far, by the way it's create and burn faster then Pinnacle and quality better. Only one cons it have to pay extra for full version. I have not paid yet, but may be later will buy full version.

Hi
I can highly recommend Magix Movie Edit Pro(www.magix.com) in case your source files are in mpeg2 format.
It is much more powerful than Ulead but still very easy to use.
And in my opinion it handles mpeg2 files best(importing, previewing, etc).

If I were you I wouldn't bother buying PD7 there is very little difference between it and PD6.
I was invited to take part in the Beta Trials and found it and the final version to be a bit temperamental playing the clips on the timeline on an XP system but was fine with Vista.

St-Clares,

I do agree with you, I have downloaded trial version, it has some new features and theme they have changed, they took black colour. But I always buy latest and new up gradation things, there are always changes in new things; they try to improve old things!

And I have checked they have put some new features.

I have tried a few editing softwares over the past few days. The winner in my opinion is Ulead VideoStudio11.

I likes the user interface of cyberlink PowerDirector more. But for some reason, PD wants to re-encode all MPEG files from my JVC MS100. They talk a lot about SVRT (Smart Video Rendering Technology) which they claim will only re-encode needed portions of the final clip, but in my experience they feature did not work as advertised. This was a deal breaker for me.

Ulead VideoStudio interface is not that bad, but it does smart rendering very nicely.

I wanted a cheap/small/quick , easy to use software, so did not spend much time with Vegas/Premiere/mediastudio.

Be careful!
The smart rendering function of ALL Videostudio version(including latest V11.5) is buggy and will produce short distortions/artefacts on borders to transitions or titles. I can highly recommend to turn OFF smartrendering in VS.
