Samsung SC-HMX10C questions

well, i don't know much about hd camcorders but after reading and comparing, i decided on an hmx10c and had a few questions. for the price (i found a new one for $350 from a local seller) it seems to have everything i want. hdmi/component, usb to pc, mp4, 720p which is perfect for my monitor and laptops, it's really compact, and has built in/expandable flash. my needs are simple, decent quality short videos i can upload online. nothing professional. so i guess my questions are, for $350, is this camcorder worth the price or is there something comparable in that price range i may not have run across? also, this will be strictly used with linux to convert the files to avi but i may need to use this with windows every now and would like to know if the camcorder comes with appropriate windows software or if i need to find 3rd party applications to do any converting. any suggestions/comments are appreciated.

camcorderinfo.com recently did a review on the Samsung HMX10 camcorder and compared it with its top rated Canon HV30 camcorder. Although the overall resolution of the 1080p Canon was higher than the 720p Samsung it was found that under high motion conditions the 720p Samsung was actually sharper than the 1080p Canon. This is because the Samsung can eliminate motion blurring by shooting at 60 frames per second while the Canon can only shoot at 30 frames per second.

found it. and several others. i broadened the search options. well, i went with the hmx10. it was $350 and never opened. it even came with a new epson r260 high def printer. i found some video clips that look perfect for what i want. all in all $350 seems right. or la little less if i end up selling the printer. i guess i'll find out once i take everything out of the box and actually handle it.

Rich

thanks, this got me to another thread for the hmx10's mp4 info for windows. and it actually looks like there's not much that needs to be done if you're using mac so it should be painless for linux.

Hi,

Could someone please help me with these questions about the Samsung SC-HMX10C:

..Are they basically just mpeg-4 files or do you have to use a proprietary codec with this camcorder?

..Do you have to use the included software or can you copy and paste during pc connection like the mpeg-2 hard drive cams/or SDHC card reader transfer?

..Can Sony Vegas Platinum edit files from this cam?

..Is there going to be a huge difference between the Canon FS100 (SD/max 9mbps) and this Samsung SC-HMX10C (HD/max 12mbps)?

..Is there a difference between the Samsung "SC-HMX10" and "SC-HMX10C"?

Thanks for any answers.

The Canon FS100 records in the AVCHD standard and the Samsung SC-HMX10C records in "MPEG-4 ASP Video CODEC - The MPEG-4 Advanced Simple Profile (ASP) Video CODEC". The Samsung manual also says that the video compression is "H.264 (MPEG-4.AVC)"

Yes, there is a difference. The difference is probably unknown so far. If anybody says one is better than the other because of the "mbps" ask for verifiable proof.

I will bet on the Canon....
