How to get good footage in bad conditions?

I have been using a dcr-sr60 to record my rock band. The results so far have been less than stunning. I looked at some footage on you tube from a fan who used a cell phone. It honestly looks better than what I've been shooting. I know the old sr60 isn't the best, but it's what I have right now. Does anyone have some tips for low light and back light conditions? I also would like to get more color. Also the night shot looks pretty good but it makes peoples eyes look creepy. Is there any infrared or other lighting setup that helps this?
