DIY Accessory Shoe for ZR 800

I want to mount my shotgun mic atop my ZR 800, I don't want to use the L-shaped mounts that screw into the tripod socket on the camera.

I bought an old junk camera and removed the accessory shoe from it, 3 small screws. Anyone have a method or design for mounting this on the zr 8xx? The top of the camera has a curve to it.

Is it safe to drill about 1/8" into this top surface? I wouldnt need to go much deeper. I'd supplement the screws with some epoxy to keep it in place and avoid ripping the plastic.
