Anyone notice a lot of PF from the HF10?
Hi Guys.
first off let me tell you my last post was in 2003 In fact i didnt even know i had signed up until i tried to use my usual username to register and it said it was taken.
I think back then i had a Panasonic GS50. Still got it but not used it for the last 3 or 4 years.
Anyway, i just got a HF10 and while i really like it i see a lot of purple fringing on outlines. Not always and not always what i would consider high contrast edges but its there. I see it a lot on the edges of peoples skin mainly. not a huge problem but i thought i would ask.
I have noticed it in some of the Vimeo vids as well.
just wondered if this is normal for this type of cam? I think C-net mentioned it but not seen an other reference to it.My Gs50 looks fine.
Cheers.
Dave.

In very bright conditions yes you see purple (rather blue) fringing.
You can remove it using software or in-cam you could reduce exposure or use cinemode (if either was is an option depending on your recording requirements).
I've put an example video of fringing and how to remove it here:

Would having a neutral density or haze filter on also help reduce the urple fringing?

Don't know, but definitely be interesting to test this (depending on cause of fringing a filter can reduce it).
I haven't noticed fortunately too much purple fringing. It usually shows up on white contrasty areas in bright sunlight.

Cheers guys.
So far ive only shot a bit but i thas been outside and the sun has been strong.
I wont worry too much about doing any PP on it but thanks for the link Luc.
I have thought about reducing the exposure anyway so might give that a go over the weekend. I quite like the Cinema mode and have been using it but i still see the fringing.
As is a new cam i guess i might just be going through that paranoid phase but im not to happy its quite as prominent as it is.
Saying that i have been looking at clips form other people (including yours Luc) and i can see it so i guess i might just be too fussy.
Its still a great cam and i love it. Just need to find something interesting to shoot.
Im also thinking of trying a ND filter to reduce the blown out highlights on skin.
Dave.

Reducing contrast helps to reduce blown-out highlights. And yes I've got another video to illustrate:-):
http://vimeo.com/945338
But some people love more contrast so best to test for yourself.
I haven't shot cinemode in bright sunlight but the few video's I saw had almost no purple fringing to speak off. Most people may find it dull looking with low contrast/sharpness but the detail preserved is great and you do get that film look if you need it. Here's an nice cinemode video: http://vimeo.com/871449

Thanks for the link.
I can see a lot of PF at the top of the umberella.
Thats makes me feel better as it shows its not just my cam.
I can live with that.
I still need to get out and get used to shooting with it but i think ill keeep it on Cinema mode for now as i do like the look. And lower the exposure a bit.
Can i ask you about Spotlight mode now (and going OT).
Im just wondering when people use it. It looks like a good choice for indoor gigs and thats what im hoping to do in the next few weeks.
Hoping to upload some footage to Viemo at some point. As i have a PAL version and cant shoot 30fps do you think 50i ro 25p would be better for this. As you can tell im pretty new to all this.
Cheers.
Dave.

Re spotlight see this post: http://www.camcorderinfo.com/bbs/t142011.html
Not sure how Vimeo treats 50i or 25p but I see a lot of PAL video's on vimeo with both framerates and they look fine (especially HF100 now). I don't know which one could be better (I believe vimeo converts it always to 30p?).
Remember that you always have a download link on vimeo to the original file (unless you intentionally disallow downloads).
