Digital still better than a camcorder?

Hi I have a Panasonic DMC-LZ7 camera which is excellent. I also have a GS85 which I like as well.

I am using a firewire going into a firewire port on my soundblaster audigy card. The picture on the pc always has a very interlaced or jaggedy look to the quality. I am using the panasonic codec for the DV footage.

I think the video footage from the still camera looks better and its in MOV format!!

Has anyone had this sort of issue??

You are looking at interlaced video on a non-interlaced computer monitor (progressive). It is normal and will look different when played back on a TV (which are interlaced) or if you use a media player like VLC which de-interlaces the video. Here is a more in depth explanation and examples.

What is Deinterlacing? Facts; solutions; examples:

Interlace vs. Progressive vs. De-Interlace

I don't know if the Panasonic DMC-LZ7 records in interlaced or progressive.

Thanks for the reply.

I have tried manipulating the captured video using numerous programs and deinterlacing plugins. I always end up with the same thing. And it does show up on the tv. When I used to capture using the GS250(long ago) I never saw this problem. So it leads me to believe that theres more to it.

An even better example of the problem is watching live video(not playback) in realtime through the firewire in ChrisTV fullscreen and taking various shots in different lighting and colors. You can see what looks like an invisible crisscross pattern causing things to get pixelated. Is this a problem with the codec? Or typical of a 1-ccd camera? You dont see it in the lcd monitor.

I am using a a new pc which I bought from this link.

I have uploaded an image capture to show the crappy footage. Dont know how to attach so I use a link.

When panning there is a faint vertical line every inch going across and many horizontal lines which are more apparent in the image. The vertical lines look as if I have a criss cross lens on the camera and follow the movements.

Your GS85 uses interlace video in the same way as your GS250 did. The same as 99% of all consumer MiniDV camcorders ever produced.
