Can new HDV camcorders play back my old miniDV tapes for archieving?
I have dozens of MiniDV PAL and NTSC recordings that I need to capture to my computer and archieve, I am looking to get a new HDV or new HD format camera, that is hopefully going to enable me to playback both formatted MiniDV tapes and batch capturing them to my computer via a software I am gonna use (probably Adobe softwares)
since I am looking to get a new camera, which cameras I should look into, when I see the "HDV" indication would that be okay with playing back old miniDV tapes?
I am really curious about this, thanks

HDV camcorders are supposed to play back Standard Definition (SD) recordings recorded in the standard SP mode and a few users have reported that it does work.
However it will not play back a PAL tape on an NTSC camcorder or visa versa.

Thanks Rich for the quick answer, so from what I understand, if I get a HDV (is that the term for HD format on miniDV tapes?) that is PAL, it will also play my standard definition PAL recorded miniDV tapes? or if it is NTSC same with SP NTSC miniDV tapes...

The HDV (High Definition Video) camcorders record on MinDV tape. They can record and playback in the HDV format and in the SD (Standard Definition) DV-AVI format.
A PAL HDV camcorder is supposed to play SD MiniDV tapes recorded in the PAL SP mode.
An NTSC HDV camcorder is supposed to play SD MiniDV tapes recorded in the NTSC SP mode.
