I wish to transfer a load of analogue video 8 tapes onto my iMac and have been told that a Sony DCR-TRV480 is the piece of kit I need but can't find one as they are discontinued. Where can I purchased a used one?
looks like ebay has them for $300. you can get older models that are just as good for much cheaper. also consider buying a cheap minidv with analog through ports. it lets you hook up your analog cam to the minidv cam and then the minidv cam sends it through firewire to a computer

Do you have a Video8/8mm camcorder to play back your Video8/8mm tapes?
You can use the TRV480. I use the TRV460. But there are other camcorders and you could get better results with a Canopus unit.
There are a variety of options for converting analog video such as VHS, VHS-C, 8mm tape or Hi8 to digital. You might carefully read through these threads which deals with analog to digital conversions:
