problems transferring HD footage back on to cam

Hi this is my first post so please go easy on me!

My camera is a Sony HDR SR1 E (30Gb), I have recorded about 28 Gb on to the camera in HD. I have then without problem transferred all footage from the said camera to external storage to enable me to carry on using my camera.

I now want to transfer the original footage back on to the camera. (The camera has been formatted) I am about halfway through trying to transfer the footage back on to the camera and it is telling me that there is insufficient space on the camera.

How can this be when it allowed me to record it all in the first place?

Please help (Its a wedding edit that I am doing that is long over due)

thanks for you time

Jonyfoz

Jonyfoz,

Did you edit the files in any way? Also how are you transferring the footage back to the camera. Are you using Picture Motion Browser to transfer (Manipulate, Export To, Handycam (Hard Disc Drive)) or just using Explorer. I find that when it comes to file transfers from or to these camera's, things just go smoother when you use the software that came with the camera (PMB). Also, if you do any editing at all in any other program than PMB or Sony Vegas Pro 8, the camera will no longer recognize the footage.

I am using (PMB) - and it is/has been working as "some" footage has transferred but now its saying that the camera is full.

Don't believe I have used any external programes or even (PMB)to do any editing with the footage in question. At worst I may have deleted a file from when it sat on the external but dont even think I have done that. Like I said its been a year since I have looked at the footage.

hope this conveys well, and thanks again.

Jonyfoz,

The only thing I can think of is that maybe there needs to be extra space on the camera's HDD for "file management" or something??? I don't know. But you say about half way through you get the "insufficient space" message? That seems like an awful lot of extra space for something like that. I have never tried to export much more than about 12 GB back into the camcorder and it went fine. Maybe there is a limit as to how much you can export back into the camcorder? I checked the help files and couldn't see any size limitations mentioned. I formatted my SR1 to see how much actual room is available and it said that I had 28228 MB available. So trying to export 28 GB back into the camcorder is really pushing the envelope. In fact, 28228 MB only translates to 27.56 GB. So there isn't even 28 GB available on the HDD to use. Are you sure you don't have some other things selected for export? Like perhaps maybe you were using the memory card for photo's, and you're now trying to add them to the HDD as well? Which brings me to another point. You can only export AVCHD footage back into a Sony Handycam. PMB will not allow you to export SD video footage or JPEGS back to the HDD even if it did originate from that very Handycam. Why?? I don't know. All I know is that it can't be done. Oh sure, you could transfer anything into the camera's HDD using Windows Explorer, but the camcorder won't recognize or play it unless it's AVCHD (and it has to be "Sony" AVCHD). The only SD and JPEG files the camcorder will play are the ones that it records at the time. But once they leave the camcorder they are not allowed to return. Pretty silly if you ask me. I don't understand it at all. But if any of those files you are trying to return to the camcorder are SD video or JPEG files, they will get stopped dead in their tracks. You could use the HDD as a storage drive to transport files from one computer to another if you like by transferring them in there using Windows Explorer. But PMB won't allow you to do it and the camcorder won't play the files. They will just be on the HDD taking up space until you remove them.

Hope this helps with your troubleshooting. This may ba a question Sony will have to answer.

I wish I knew, but I've never owned a Mac so I'm not sure what the procedure would be to get the files back into the cam in a way that they would play. I'm sure it can be done. Probably even simpler than with a PC. I just don't know. Maybe someone with a Mac can enlighten us.

Hey thanks Ernie for your reply again.

I guess I will have to be selective as to what files I need to transfer and what files I can delete before I transfer to camera.

cheers jonyfoz
