HD versus SD recording

i have a question that sony tech support just cant understand, IMO, they are not very smart. so here it is
for the purpose of burning regular dvd's for viewing on regular TV's...
is it better to shoot in high def, and downconvert it in the computer for burning to regular dvds,...
or shoot in standard definition in the first place ?

I've responded 3 times to Emails with tech support. are they are idiots, really.
can anyone answer this question ???
and if it is better to shoot in high def and downconvert it later, which free porgram would be best for the job ?

It could vary depending on which High Definition format you are dealing with. I've seen at least three different sample tests as well as comments that with HDV, primarily the Canon HV20 and HV30 the best results are obtained by recording in HDV, capture as HDV, edit as HDV and then render to the desired DVD MPEG2 format for DVD authoring.

Personally I see a better quality from converting from HD to SD. Kind of between the two. Suggest you cam 2-2 minute clips, one in HD, one in SD.Convert the HD down then Play them on your tv and see what YOU like better.
