Vegas 5.0 vs. 8.0 pro question

Ok I have a problem with Vegas. I have 5.0 and when I add files from my camera (MPEG)the audio does not come over with it. I downloaded a trial version of 8.0 and those same files came over into the program with audio without a problem.

If I convert the file using Ulead then import it into Vegas 5.0 I can get the audio to work. Is there a setting or a usual suspect that makes this occur that I can look at?

Thank you. Sorry for all of the questions.

My guess would be that the audio is AC3. Vegas 5 cannot import AC3 audio. Vegas 8 can when embedded in an MPEG file. That would be why 8 can read the audio but 5 cannot.

I have had similar problems where sometimes the audio does not import into Vegas or some avi files (from one source such as Swishmax) import fine & other avi files (from another source, say a Flip camcorder) do not unless it's converted to another format first, etc. While I've done ALOT of video editing, I'm not knowledgeable about why these idiosyncrasies occur. So I just keep really good notes in my PIM software.

Thank you. So should I convert it with another program? That is what I had ot do to work on a friends wedding video but my trial for Ulead is about to expire and I like the options available in Vegas.

The easier option may be just to upgrade your Vegas to Vegas 8, since that works.

(I don't know if it's less expensive to buy Ulead vs upgrading Vegas. If you plan on doing much tinkering and elect to purchase Ulead, it may come in handy in other instances. I've never used Ulead. The conversion program I use is Winavi and it tends to come in handy, when dealing with footage from various sources.)

Im looking into that but currently im off work and this was all a "project" my father in law took on that landed in my lap. Thats how I ended up with 5 instead of something more current.

That can easily happen. AVI is a file format, sometimes called a container, that can contain several video formats. DV is the most popular which Vegas can easily handle and probably what you are getting from Swishmax. AVI files can also contain other formats which Vegas cannot handle and that's what you're probably getting from the Flip.

You really have no choice other than to convert those files to a format Vegas likes. I suggest the program called Super for this task. It's free and handles quite a range of formats. The web site is a bear to navigate but once you find how to actually download the file I think it will let you continue to use Vegas after converting your files.

Another good program to have in your arsenal is avicodec which will tell you what codec (syn. with format) the file uses.

Good luck.

Dennis
