Convert .mov hd footage to more manageable format
I'm back from my first major video recording vacation. I have somewhere around 6 hours of footage, all recorded in 1280x720p .mov. The camera is a SPEED HD-7z..ya most people havent heard of it, its a generic hong kong knock of brand, and so far im pretty disappointed. But at this point, I have to work with what I've got. So my current problem is that my 3ghz pentium4 with 1 gig of memory isnt up to the task of editing this video.
Seems my only course of action is to convert the footage to something more manageable. But I'm not sure what and how. Would it be reasonable to just convert to something of dvd quality (could someone suggest a specific resolution). And what would be an appropriate format? MPEG2? I would like to eventually make some DVDs of the edit, but that probably won't be my only means of distribution (most likely vimeo would be the other main route, as well as a single data file for play directly on computers). Finally, what's a good program for converting. Currently I'm running Premiere on Windows XP, but I also have linux installed, as well as my brothers PPC Mac (slower), if needed.
Thanks
