Fidelity of Everio GZ MC500

We have an Everio GZ MC500 which we bought three years ago. Unfortunately, we rarely use this camcorder (about two times a year). We recently attempt to use it and to our disappointment, the unit is not working. When we turn on the unit, the camcorder would advise that the lens cap is on even though the lens cap is not on. As a result, the LCD displays a blank or black screen and it records nothing as if the lens cap is on. We asked JVC support. The technician suggests us to take the battery out and insert it back in. This did not work. So the technician asks us to send it back to JVC for repair. I am not sure if it is worth the money to send it to JVC and spend the money to fix it. JVC did not tell us how much the repair will be. However, considering the cost of this camcorder (~$1600), it is hard for us to just waste this camcorder. Has anyone observed this problem? I found the quality of this camcorder unacceptable when it costs so much and it breaks only after a few uses. Considering our Everio is our second one of the same model. Our first unit had none repairable problem after two uses, according to JVC’s warranty Services, so Best Buy allowed us to do an exchange. I find it hard to believe we got two pieces of lemons in a roll. I appreciate any advice .
