shooting in DVCAM problems

I've been downloading my video into FCP6--no problem. Decided to shoot some footage in DVcam and when I went to download it I got one timecode break after another, with the tape running only a few seconds before each break. I decided to start with a fresh tape and set the TC, shot a few minutes--but with the same result on download. Never have problems with this shooting in the other mode.
Any suggestions? By the way, I understand video quality is not the least better in DVcam--any opinions on that? Does anyone find an advantage in shooting in DVcam except for linear editing?
