Sheesh... Canon already announced the HFS11... better OIS and night shooting, but everything else is the same.

Sort of a bug-fix release?

When was the HFS10 released?

Current crop of new Vixias (HFS models, as well as HF 20/200, and HV40) were announced at CES in January. Some of them didn't start shipping until April or later.

Looks exactly like last year; they announced HV30, HF10/100 in January, shipped them in April, then announced HF11 in summer, shipped in September.

What's the deal here? Is this refresh cycle so compressed that even 9 months (between shipping one model and announcing next at CES) isn't enough anymore?

ALmost by tradition, Sept. is the magic month for release of consumer camcorders. I THINK this occurs right after CES or another organization has their convention.

The new model will have a larger capacity internal card. Perhaps the biggest improvement will be the STEADYSHOT/STABILZER which the HF S10 etc. needed due to the lighter weight factor.

See the watch impress review for sample video's (see my other post). Stabilization looks really great. There are also 2 youtube HF S11 videos showing the stabilization while walking. Haven't seen the night mode yet other than the framegrabs (the video doesn't look better than cinemode).

I doubt the HF S11 will be for sale in September in the US. IIRC the HF11 sold a bit later. But Japanese models are on ebay.

New electronic model releases are typically twice a year March/April (after CES) and September/October (CEDIA, ...). But typically models don't change more often than once a year. I think in March we'll see the real successor of the current HF S10/HF S100.
