I bought a TRV38!

Hi all,

And what a deal it was!!!

I was going to buy this at the online retailer, Butterfly Photo. But i was a little aprehensive about spending so much online. So i was reading on this, and some other message boards about people taking online price quotes to Sears, and having them price match. The results were mixed but i figured what the hell. So i took the shopping cart print out with me, and the kid said, "let me just verify this is real." A few minutes later he came back, and said, "Sure, we'll honor this!"

So in the end, Sears had the TRV38 for $899.99, and they sold it to me for the quote i had, at $629.00. Also since this fell under their Price Match Guarantee, they also gave me the usual 10% off the differnece in price, another $27.00!

I played with the unit for a bit last night, and was quite impressed with the 16x9 shooting this is capable of. it looks damn good on my 48" WS.

Thanks for all the suggestions. i am going to hava great time with this when my daughter is born in February

I am getting one too

I am going to get one from PC Richard today. They will price match to J&R's $729 and i will buy it with their card that gives me the option to pay it off in 18 months no interest.
I don't want to spend all that money at once for the camera because i need to buy other stuff too, like DVD burner, firewire cable, light and couple of other things.
This way it will not heart my wallet at all.

I also have small 5.5 month old baby boy and want to start making some films.

I ordered mine Friday night...

from J&R for $729.

I actually bought it thru Amazon.com but it will be coming from J&R. If you sign up for the Amazon.com Visa at the time of purchase, you also get a $30 gift certificate and 12 months no interest.

Anyway, I am so looking forward to getting this camera. When I cross-shopped Circuit City, they would not match J&R's price so they lost my business. At Circuit City, I was able to try out and compare the TRV33, TRV38, and DVD100 models. The salesman was really pushing the DVD models. You gotta love the 3.5" LCD on the TRV38. As for the DVD models he was pushing, when I explained to the salesman I was worried about double MPEG2 compression, first when the camera saves to miniDVD and a second time when edited on the computer and remastered to DVD, he looked like a deer in headlights. I believe that the miniDVD camcorders are best for those who don't intend to edit the video on a computer.

I also bought the Sony starter kit with the LCSVA3 case, FM50 battery, and tape. I hope I chose a good kit.

I just got back from PC Richard with the camera. I did few minutes footage in low and good indoor light. And i am happy with the quality for now. I will do some filming outside through the holidays.

JamesKr
I was thinking about getting it from Amazon but for the few $ i liked better the idea to pick it up in local store.

Actually the Sears site says that they will match the price +10% of the difference if you find a lower price at a local retail store or their online site. If a local retail store has the camera for $450 new than that is a steal. If it is a some non-local online site than they don't have to match.

That's the way I read it.

Price Matching

They will not much unknown or internet only stores.
When i went to PCR i brought with me three printouts from the net. One of them was $520 second $599 and the third one from J&R was $729.
They told me flat out that they will not match the first two low prices because they were internet only stores.
They matched J&R without a question.

His company is about 20 minutes from me, so I am going to order it (it's backed by yahoo for seller fraud...), and then pick it up myself, rather than have them deliver it.

Be sure the serial number is not tampered with when you pick it up. Sounds like a "hot" item to me for that price.
