Panasonic GS-70 loading footage via firewire onto Avid DV Express???

Hey there,

I just got a Panasonic GS-70 and am new to this whole home editing setup. I'm wanting to get my own setup. I just installed a firewire port into my computer (Pentium 4) and have Avid already installed.

The problem I have is that the firewire cord doesn't seem to fit into the Panasonic GS-70 anywhere... is it meant to go into the USB port?

Can someone give me a basic rundown on how the wires are meant to be connected? Do firewire cables come with different sized heads (which go into different cameras?)

Any help from someone who's used a Pansonic GS-70 and successfully loaded it onto the Avid would be most appreciated.

I then will need some guidance (if possible) about how to get the Avid to recognise the camera and load on this footage!

But first things first

Hayden

PS - If anyone has any "how to" websites regarding these queries...they would be MOST appreciated

firewire port

The firewire port is found on the back of the camera near the batterie at the bottom behind a rubber cover.

Cheers a million!

Don't know how I didn't find it myself!!

Any ideas on how to make it connect with Avid? Like what settings do I have to change...I just need an idea of what drop down menu icon I'm meant to go to...to get it to work.

ANYBODY out there got Avid experience that could help here?

Is it really as straight forward as plugging it in, and away you go?

I don't have the Avid manuals at the moment, because they are overseas with a family member...

I feel like I'm so close to getting it...yet so far?

With a firewire connection, can you then transfer the edited material from your PC back to the camera?

Sorry this is a billion questions...but anyone that could help me would be most appreciated!

I've had experience on Avids before...but not putting DV cameras straight into the computer...

Any thoughts/tips/websites would be very much appreciated.

Many thanks

Hayden

I use Adobe Premiere and can't really provide any advice as how to capture. Perhaps you may want to consult the www.avid.com site, they may have manuals on line.

Hayden,
I'm not familiar with Avid either, but look under File/Capture or Tools if it has those folders. Plug in the DV cable to the GS70 and turn it on and set it to VCR mode. Windows XP will detect the camcorder and will pop up a window asking what program you want to use. If Avid is there, select it. If not, select Take No Action, then open Avid and proceed from there. You should be able to control the camcorder from within Avid if it has a capture feature.

BTW, I'm moving this thread to the Avid forum because you may get more responses there. It is a little OT for the GS forum.

Checking Firewire port..is it Two way?

Thanks for your advice. I'm still trying to get it all to work.

I have another question.

I have just installed a PCI to Firewire IEEE 1394 Host Adaptor.

I was wondering IS THIS TWO WAY?

ie - Can I input the camera material onto the computer, AND also record edited material straight back to the camera?

I have a feeling I might have the wrong firewire adaptor....

Can someone help me out??

Didn't an editing program come with the camera? I have a PV GS250 and it came with that program. You can very easily capture using that program using the USB cable that should have also come with the camera.

Most editing software which comes with camcorders is pretty limited.

Only certain camcorders can capture with USB. It is fully explained in this thread: USB vs Firewire
